Mount Kilimanjaro Trekking Routes
There are several routes to the summit of Kilimanjaro all with their unique attributes: the Shira Plateau aka the Western Breach or Lemosho Route; Machame; Rongai; and Marangu. As we have tried to display in the map above, there is, in fact, considerable overlap amongst some of the routes.
The Machame route is the signature route of Blue Rhino Expeditions though we offer service on any of the routes. We chose the Machame because of its beauty (some say that it is the most beautiful of all the routes) and because it is not too touristy. The Machame route approaches the summit from the southwest.
The Shira Plateau/Western Breach/Lemosho route is the longest and most strenuous and approaches the summit from the west.
The Rongai route approaches the summit from the north and crosses the saddle between Kibo and Mawenza.
The Marangu route approaches the summit from the southeast. On this route, trekkers sleep in and take their meals in huts.
Your experience begins with our US-based team who will send you a Blue Rhino Information Pack and talk through your plans, including your group, your needs, your budget and your goals for your Kilimanjaro adventure.
